Supervisor Training in NVR-informed Clinical Supervision

A PartnershipProjects International Training Course

What

Practitioners require clinical supervision to support them in their work with NVR, so they can maximise their effectiveness and safely manage risk. This can only be delivered safely by professionals who are proficient in the delivery of NVR, and who have received additional training in recognising and addressing the supervisory needs of practitioners working within the approach. This training and consultation module helps supervisors develop support structures for NVR practitioners and deals with questions such as:

  • What skills, competencies, knowledge and understandings has the supervisor gained in their own practice involving NVR? How has this shaped them as a person and as a professional?
  • What is the participants own relationship with seeking help and support?
  • What are the specific supervisory needs of practitioners using NVR? What impasses in practice do they need to help their supervisees overcome?
  • In which ways, and using which methods can a supervisor address their supervisees’ needs?
  • How will the delivery of supervision be organised – individual, group supervision, peer supervision? What other models of supervision should be incorporated in the support structure?
  • What is the overall structure of support for NVR practice within the supervisor’s organisation? How does this support structure need to change or improve, to enable safe, effective and efficient practice of NVR?
  • With which managers within the organisation can the supervisor develop a working alliance, to achieve the necessary service development?

The training takes places over three full days. Day one will be delivered online. Participants will be set learning tasks to complete before days two and three which will take place in person 3 weeks later. Learning tasks will include working online with another participant (PP will identify a buddy for you to work with) for two, hour long, peer supervision sessions while keeping a record of experiences and learning.

Why

The training develops the skill-base for specific ‘clinical’ supervision in NVR; this is particularly necessary for workforce development, risk management and safe, competent practice: working with issues relating to aggression, violence, destructive behaviour and trauma is especially taxing to the individual frontline practitioner, who requires high-level expert support to prevent burn-out or secondary traumatisation and maintain their emotional well-being.

Expert supervision ensures that these workers perform at a high level of competence; they need their own support network, in the same way that they promote the family’s development of a functional support network when working with NVR.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will explore and deepen their understanding of their own relationship with seeking support and with principles of NVR
  • Participants will learn to recognise supervisory needs specific to the practice of NVR.
  • Participants will be introduced to supervision methods which can address these needs.
  • Supervisors will be introduced to the specific use of reflecting team methods in the delivery of NVR.
  • Eligibility to become an NVRA accredited supervisor (on completion of coursework)
