Parental Presence Star Training – Outcomes Star

Train with the leading & award-winning provider of Non-Violent Resistance Training for Professionals

Next Training: Tuesday 4th November 2025

Are you using NVR (Non-Violent Resistance) with parents / carers in a clinical setting?

Are you interested in a way to measure the impact this approach has on the families you support?

If yes, then we’re delighted to introduce you to the Parental Presence Outcomes Star; the first NVR-specific, collaborative outcome measure, part of the Outcomes Star suite of tools with training exclusively available through PartnershipProjects.

About the Parental Presence Star Training

The Parental Presence Star was developed by PartnershipProjects, in collaboration with Triangle Consulting Social Enterprise. The process involved workers, managers and parents with lived experience from across the UK and beyond. The tool was piloted in 2023/24 after which the results were psychometrically validated.

Completing the Parental Presence Star is intended to be a helpful, engaging and empowering process that stimulates and focuses discussion and provides a useful, shared basis for an action or support plan. It is a flexible tool that relies on the skills of the professionals using it, as well as on a degree of understanding and trust between them and the parent. The Star is designed to be used one-to-one where there is support provided over a period of time. The aim is to have a genuine interaction and complete it collaboratively.

Before using the tool, all workers are required to attend training in order that they are familiar with the materials and know when and how to use them. It is vital that you understand and use the Journey of Change underlying the scales – stuck, starting a new approach, small positive signs, building skills and confidence, and managing well. This will ensure consistent and reliable information as a basis for support planning and for use by your service. You also need to be familiar with all the scale descriptions, so you can unpack and rephrase them as needed.

PartnershipProjects is the only organisation that is licensed to offer training in the Parental Presence Star.

About the Parental Presence Star

How does the Parental Presence Star work?

The Parental Presence Star is for parents engaging in Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) or other similar approaches as a way to turn around and manage a home or family situation that has become unsafe, risky or otherwise unacceptable.

This Star is for all those in a parenting role, including foster carers, adoptive or step-parents, those offering supported placements or other carers.  The Parental Presence Star was also successfully piloted with parents of children in a residential children’s home, where the parents had active engagement in the approach.

The Parental Presence Star was developed in collaboration with PartnershipProjects. The process involved practitioners, managers and parents with lived experience.

The Parental Presence Star is a holistic, person-centred keywork and measurement tool for practitioners to use in one-to-one support work. Completing the Star is an engaging, empowering and collaborative process that helps you to build an open, trusting relationship with the person that you’re supporting.

The Star aims to create a safe space where genuine conversations can happen and you can explore all relevant aspects of a person’s life, track progress and create a shared basis for an action or support plan.

The Parental Presence Star covers seven outcome areas:

  1. Looking after myself
  2. Our community of support
  3. Dealing with difficult situations
  4. Parental presence
  5. Our family relationships
  6. How I feel
  7. How my child is doing

What are the benefits of the Outcomes Stars?

How does the Parental Presence Star work?

The Outcomes Stars give you an evidence-based measurement tool to support keyworking in a way that is person-centred, collaborative and trauma-informed.

They work because they are underpinned with a sense of hope – that even when things are challenging, positive change in some way is always possible. Their detail and flexibility helps you to understand what’s likely to work for an individual while giving you more information to help you deliver effective services.

Why are the Outcomes Stars so effective?

  • A clearer and more detailed picture of change. The Star measures not only end outcomes – for example gaining employment – but includes broader outcomes such as quality of life.
  • An integral part of keywork. The Star is completed collaboratively vs self-reporting or a professional-only tool.
  • Supporting action planning. The Star allows you to easily see information about the areas where support is needed and what that support should look like.
  • Support for effective service delivery. The Stars help your organisation to deliver support in a holistic, strengths-based and person-centred way.
  • Tailored organisational support. Many measurement tools offer little to no support on how to use them. Using an Outcomes Star means you will get tailored support so you can understand whether the Star is a good fit, training so staff can use the Star effectively and access to the Star Online digital platform.
